Wissahickon Schist
Wissahickon Schist
Partnering with Southern Accents, Beaty American recovered the interiors including stained glass, marble floors, doors, etc. from our interiors of Our Lady of the Rosary.
The exterior consisted of Wissahickon schist with a great deal of gneiss in it. This type of schist comes from a formation that extends from Pennsylvania down to Maryland. Schist formations grade into higher and lower amounts. A highly desirable building stone throughout the Delaware Valley.
In the 20s, when so many buildings were built of WS around the area, there at least 5 quarries operating at that time. All of them pulling WS out of the ground from different places in the geological formation. Many traces of old quarries can be found scattered throughout the Wissahickon Valley. Other quarries at a greater distance include the Marcolina, Crispo, and Vecchione quarries on Waverly Road in Glenside, and the McKinney quarry across Lincoln Drive from Rittenhouse Town. The McKinney quarry is one of many quarries once located in the Wissahickon Valley. Most of these were closed by the turn of the 20th century. Those at the lower end of Chestnut Hill remained in operation until after World War II.
