Scagliola Columns with Ionic Capitals
Columns of terracotta made to look like marble with a scagliola finish was the technique used for producing these set of four columns. It resembles inlays of marble. A pigmented plaster on a stone surface sprinkled with a veining color look. It first appeared in Europe at the end of the 16th century. It was initially used in the decoration of royal palaces and Roman Catholic churches, and subsequently in public buildings and in aristocratic houses. Acquired from the Woodlands Cemetery in Philadelphia, a local historian believes the columns came from University of Pennsylvania’s 3rd and Arch streets original campus, circa 1840.
