Story:
Wissahickon schist is valued for its durability and shine. If you’re a builder looking for some, look no further. This is a high grade of Wissahickon schist with a great deal of gneiss in it (analysis available upon request).
Newly mined Wissahickon schist goes for $400-450 a ton. This reclaimed material will not only save you money, but help save the planet! LEED certified projects get gain points by using reclaimed materials.
The book Pillars of the Earth, a 1989 novel by Ken Follet, is about the building of a cathedral in 10th century England. Through this, the book explores people’s duty to the earth and what we build from it. It’s one of Bob Beaty’s, the owner of Beaty American, favorite books.
Our Lady of the Rosary had its cornerstone laid in 1888. It was a Romanesque church built for 1,000 parishioners. In 1996, it had merged and been renamed Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament, and 90% of attendees were Caribbean or African American. By 2013, after multiple mergers, the church only had about 440 attendees on average. There was a push to turn the church into a gym for the Boys Latin Charter School, but they ended up demolishing the building.
This schist is from that church
Bob worked with Southern Accents to dismantle the church and save as much as possible. Bob often talks about his “calling,” half-seriously, that when he was young he felt a pull to try and save the earth. Whenever he works on a church, he thinks of that book, Pillars of the Earth, and puts as much care into taking them apart as people did building them.
